RWLC HOLDS 6TH ANNUAL WINE TASTING, DINNER AND AUCTION
On Saturday, September 26, 2009 the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert (RWLC) held their 6th Annual Wine Tasting, Dinner and Auction at the Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick, Maryland. This year’s theme was “Celebrating Maryland’s 375th Anniversary.” The event was an outstanding success with 136 attendees. Vineyard owners Mike and Barbara Scarborough were our hosts for the evening. This delightful event under the tent was beautifully set up and decorated by RWLC members Delores Brown, Catherine Grasso, Marilyn Quinn, Midgie Haerer, Linda Woods, Ella Ennis, and Joanie Martin and extra muscle power provided by Frank Grasso and Jim Quinn. Welcoming everyone for the evening and assisting with auction check out were Treasurer Marilyn Quinn, and members Darcey Clark and Judy Roane.
The evening began with a Silent Auction and hospitality hour with homemade appetizers prepared by Anita Brown and Estelle Arscott followed by the Wine Tasting at 7 p.m. Mike Scarborough presented 5 of the Vineyard’s wines and shared some of his experiences with growing grapes and producing wine in Calvert County, MD. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about both the wines and wine making. Each wine was clearly described in our beautiful program booklet designed by Judy MacWilliams and expertly printed by Richard MacWilliams.
In keeping with the Celebrating Maryland’s 375th Anniversary, the bar included a Maryland Beer “1634” and the dinner buffet, prepared by Bailey’s Catering of St. Mary’s County, featured Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham, Crab Balls and Southern Maryland Fried Chicken. Topping off dinner was coffee and Maryland 375th Anniversary Cake.
A lively Live Auction was conducted by Audrey Scott, Former Secretary of Planning for the State of Maryland and two-term Council Member for Prince George’s County. She kept everyone’s interest with her humorous commentary and effectively welded the Auctioneer’s gavel to bring bids to completion. The auction was organized by June Lusby and Estelle Arscott with many welcome donations from generous RWLC members. In addition, Frank and Catherine Grasso assisted with delivering and displaying several of the large auction items. Members Terri Wolfley and Husband and Catherine and Frank Grasso staffed the bar. Other members who assisted with logistics were Mary Shultz, Delores Brown and Midgie Haerer.
The now famous “Tubs of Cheer” raffle organized by Anita Brown with assistance by Della Stull and Mike Brown again added to the financial success of this evening. A new attraction was our Maryland Tins organized by Heather Allman.
Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to the Planning Team for their many hours of hard work planning and organizing this great event and special thanks to everyone who supported this event with the attendance and participation.

RWLC WINE TASTING PROGRAM PRIZE WINNER
Congratulations to Ann Kmett-Pendry for having the winning program #184 selected to receive a $50 gift certificate to Outback Restaurant.
As an incentive for RWLC Wine Tasting attendees to check out our program Advertisers, we offered a prize for a winning number placed inside the program. However, the winning number wasn’t selected until Sunday morning following the event. It was then posted on the RWLC Web Site. Attendees had to take home their program to win. The hope is that attendees will support the program advertisers. Thanks to member Judy Roane for an innovative and fun idea.
